Final Essay
Endangered Animals of Hawaii
Hawaii’s species population has decreased rapidly over the past couple of years. There are 44 endangered animals out of 317 endangered species today this year. Such as The Hawaiian Monk Seal, Nene Bird, and Green Sea Turtle. Hawaii native species are becoming extinct to the islands in which we live today. These native species symbolizes things to hawaii.
“The Hawaiian Monk Seal is named for its folds of skin that somewhat resemble a monk’s cowl, and because it is usually seen alone or in small groups”. The Hawaiian name for the monk seal is “ ‘Ilio holo I ka uaua” which means, “dog that runs in rough water. Humans have moved into the locations that monk seals frequented. The biggest threat to Hawaiian monk seals is tiger sharks. The sharks prey on these monk seals. Because of this many Hawaiian monk seals are endangered and even with protection efforts we have, the population of this species is “believed to have fallen more than ten percent per year since 1989”.
“The Nene Bird is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and the official bird of the State of Hawaii since 1957. It is the world’s rarest goose with only around 1,000 living in the wild”. The Nene bird became rare and closely extinct from hunting by Native Hawaiians, and introduction from predators, like mongoose and cats by European Settlers. According to Konica Minolta, “At one time, there were only 30 Nene Birds in existence due to hunting and attack by other animals brought to the island”. This is a big difference in population because there was once a sight throughout the Hawaiian Islands, that there was a population reaching 25,000 birds in the 18th century. The decrease in population came from immigrants from Europe arriving on the islands of Hawaii bringing cats and mongoose.
“Green Sea Turtles are reptiles whose ancestors evolved on land and took to the sea to live about 150 million years ago. They are one of the few species so ancient that they watched the dinosaurs evolve and become extinct”. The green sea turtle is named not for color of the shell, but for the greenish color of their skin. The dangerous time for green sea turtles is when they make their journey from their nest to the sea because of the multiple predators such as, crabs and flocks of gulls, which prey on hatchlings. According to Conserve Turtles “The population estimate of green sea turtles are 88,250 nesting females”.
In conclusion, Hawaii native species are becoming extinct to the islands in which we live today. The very few endangered species of Hawaii such as Hawaiian monk seal, green sea turtle, and the Nene bird are endangered and becoming extinct from the cause of their predators which is humans, crabs, gulls, and sharks. And this isn’t just a little decrease in population; this is a major decrease such as from 25,000 to 30 Nene birds left. This issue is important because the decrease in population of our species decreases our lifestyles. For example, if the fish in the sea decreased humans would have less fish to eat. So, the important issue is that Hawaiian native species are becoming endangered and extinct and humans need to do something about it.

Oceans of Nothing
By: Chevaughn Bolden and Ryne Oshiro
With the population of fisherman
being on the rise, the number of fishes in the ocean have been
rapidly decreasing. Nowadays fisherman have been getting careless and not
respecting that there is no need to overfish and instead of taking only what is
needed, they have been taking more leading to the decline. This hasn't been a
all of sudden type of instance. Since 1999, the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Seafood Watch program in California has been handing out pocket guides that
list sustainable harvested seafood. This may be a good thing for the
United States, but this isn't only occurring here. Other countries such as
Japan, India, China, and England have also been struck with the overfishing. It
is a work in progress for the Aquarium, but as they raise awareness it needs to
go WORLDWIDE.
Over the past 30 years, the fish
export has grown with incredible numbers. The trade has about 30 million tons
which is made to about $71 billion dollars. Within the numbers, about 90% of
big predators in the ocean (cod and tuna) have been out of existence.
Industry analyst Howard Johnson stated "There's now a global effort to
reduce or eliminate fishing practices that aren't sustainable. With that
increased awareness, these projections just aren't realistic." This world
has evolved to everything having to be sustainable. Johnson is
right about raising awareness for this topic. More than 29% of fish species
have already collapsed and the trend is increasing. Stores
and restaurants such as Wal-Mart and Red Lobster have been making
commitments to sell sustainable harvested seafood. And so you can
"Seafood differently".
People need to understand that fishes
in the ocean are decreasing, it not only starts in the U.S but should start
spreading to around the world. As stated by Brian Halweil, "it would
be wonderful if everyone started
eating sustainable seafood." Although this is
the very beginning of spreading awareness, this will become
a huge deal if they spread awareness and statistics will show whether
or not that they are doing a good job or not. Something as big as
this topic should be shared worldwide.

As I enter the room, exhausted, tired, and angry, I see the bed. The bed that was always there waiting for me when i get home, the bed that I have been with for ages, the bed that was my comfort. That bed was in my room. My room is that special place where I can be who I am...well not really it's the place where I'm trying to figure out who I am, who I am really.
My room is the place I have to find out who I really am because of those special memories I have had in that room. The smooth pictures on that blank wall of my family members, friends, and me determine who I possibly am by the way I act around them. Take the wall as an example of me. The wall represents me blank not knowing what makes me stand out from others but as soon as those pictures go on the wall it makes it stand out. Just like me when I have those special memories in my mind it brings out the best of me.
My room is the place where I can reflect on my life and what I have been through life to get where I am now. It's where I can talk to God about anything and everything. I tell him what I'm going through and its just me and him but I still don't know what his voice sounds like so I don't know if he really hears me talking to him. It's where I can talk about my problems in life.
My room looks like exactly a room, four white walls with items on the wall and furniture. I think of my room as a journey. It's like when I enter my room I'm looking at who I am between what I have in my room to what is in it. It comforts me through my rough nights between family fights with my dad, friends. or just one of those nights where I just want to be alone. I once read a quote that said It is good to feel lost... because it proves you have a navigational sense of where "Home" is. You know that a place that feels like being found exists. And maybe your current location isn't that place but, Hallelujah, that unsettled, uneasy feeling of lost-ness just brought you closer to it. ~Erika Harris It's where I can't be judged by anyone, in my room. I feel as if I'm in my own world, the world of discovering who I am.

Roots and Recipe Final Draft
I remember it like yesterday, the day I walked into the house smelling the aroma of batter. It smelled so sweet that I could taste the softness of the batter on my tongue. It tasted like, well I can't really explain it. The batter is like it has no taste, but it does. But what I really wondered was how was the recipe really made and the importance of it.
As my mother took out the mixing bowl we had used for many years, it took me back to when I first tried this famous cake, as if it was a few hours ago.
Imagine this: a little girl walking down the stairs, to see what's going on. But as soon as she took her first step into this new discovery she was satisfied.
When she took that first bite, she knew she had entered a new chapter of her life red velvet cake. The taste of the cake wasn't like something she ever tried before. When she took those first few bites it was like strawberries bursting in her mouth. You could taste the crunchy pecans and hearing them crack in your mouth.
But, back to reality....while still trying to figure out the mystery of why this recipe is so important. I went to the most reliable source I could find, my mom.
I watched her take out the ingredients from vanilla extract, eggs, baking soda, creme cheese, walnuts, baking powder and etc., I ask her "Why is this cake so special to you" and she gives me the answer "Because it was your dad's mother's recipe" and I got why it was important because my grandmother had passed away.
So, as I watched my mother crack the hard shell "crack crack crack" on the counter and open it into the bowl and watch it fall out, I began to wonder why this was always made I started to realize this recipe is so special to our family because my grandmother who is deceased always had made this recipe and its really special to my dad because that was his role model for life. She took care of him and disciplined him. She made a big difference in his life.

Roots and Recipes Brainstorm Part 1
The food that I will be describing is called Red Velvet Cake. One special memory that I have with this food is that it's the only cake that I tasted from my grandma who passed away and she was known for baking. So, its special to me because i've always wanted to taste her cakes but I never got the chance to try all of them. Some sensory details that I will be using to bring the cake alive is that how its moisture of chewy sweet cake and the smooth icing that leaves a taste in your mouth. The person that I will be interviewing for this recipe is my father because it was his mother's cake and he was there to try all of them, so I think it's most special to him.
