Merchant of Venice Play: Rough Draft.
Back then in the Shakespeare time, Love,
religion, money, justice, and law
each play a role in the Merchant of Venice that shows a perspective on others
in the book. Basaanio wants to see the girl he dreams to be with Portia, but he
has no money. So he goes to his
dear friend Antonio for a loan of money. This causes Antonio to go to Shylock a
man who lends money to others, but Antonio and Shylock don’t really have a
great relationship because Antonio is a Christian and Shylock is a jew, but
Shylock looks past that. “I will buy with you, sell with
you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following; but I will not eat with
you, drink with you, nor pray with you.”
This shows that Shylock looked past the relationship status they have
which is bad one but he will still have some conversation with Antonio.
Shylock is the type of person who believes in revenge
towards people especially Christians. “I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? hath
not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the
same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by
the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian
is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you
poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are
like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian,
what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his
sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you teach me, I
will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.” This
shows that Shylock has a big hatred towards Christians and thinks as if two
wrongs make a right.
Shylock only thinks about his money He doesn’t care about
his family and the reasons why they do what they do. “Why,
thou-
loss upon loss! The thief gone with so much, and so much to
find the thief; and
no satisfaction, no revenge; nor no ill luck
stirring but what lights o' my
shoulders; no sighs but o' my
breathing; no tears but o' my shedding!” He has
no idea of why Jessica ran away with his money, only thing he is focused on is
the justice he can seek against Antonio.
“What, Jessica!- Thou shalt not gormandize
As thou hast done with me-
What, Jessica!-
And sleep and snore, and rend apparel out-
Why, Jessica, I say!”
Shylock is not really loving to his daughter. The way he talks to her is the
way he talks to others in a cruel way. This may show that he doesn’t really
care for his daughter just himself and his money, and revenge against others. H
will regret this because it will cause him and his daughter to drift apart and
he will lose her.
In this play, Shylock portrays a cruel Jew. Someone who
has hatred towards Christian. Cares more about money than family. Overall
Shylock portrays law, religion, money, justice, and law in some type of way in
this play. At which Shylock will regret everything he has done in the end.

Merchant of Venice pre reading work

Don’t rely on outward appearances
when making judgments.
I agree you shouldn’t rely on outward appearances making
judgments. I agree because you
never really get to know the person. If you rely on the outward appearance you
might miss out on missing on a person you want in your life. I judged one of my
friends the first time I saw them they looked weird so I thought they were
weird but I got to know them now I’m glad I have them in my life.
•
Justice is always blind.
I agree with this
statement that justice is always blind. I agree with this because it shouldn’t
matter what race, what you look like. Justice is always equal.
•
A brotherly love between two friends
can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman.
I agree with this statement.
I love my best friend, but I don’t love her the way I would love my boyfriend.
You can have a love but not just as intimate.
•
You can break a promise as long as
you have a good excuse
I agree you can break a promise as long as you have a good
excuse. For example, I promised
that I would go to the mall with my friend, but then I got grounded and I had
to break that promise. So as long as you have a good excuse its ok.
•
Love is blind
I think love can
sometimes be blind. I don’t really have a personal experience with this because
I’m too young to be in love with someone. But this statement can be true.
•
Stereotypes are often right.
Stereotypes are often right. For example, Black people like
fried chicken this is a true stereotype. This is probably because blacks grew
up with fried chicken way back when.
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto
to live by.
I agree with this statement because you get what you dish
out. For example, if someone hits me I’m going to hit him or her back. It’s
basically revenge
The play opens with Antonio, the merchant, admitting that he is sad, but not knowing why. Think of times when you’ve been sad. Have you always understood exactly why, or has your sadness sometimes seemed strange to you? Explain.
Yes, I have been sad I was sad when my grandmother died. I was sad because i felt like I never really got the chance to talk to her or get to say goodbye one last time.
2.) In Shakespeare’s time, lending money for interest was called “usury” and was generally considered immoral. How have attitudes changed since then?
Lending money people expect you to pay them back so thats how it changed
3.) Think of the recent banking crisis and the state of today’s economy. Do you think it’s all right to lend someone a large amount of money based on their word and reputation even though they may not have any concrete evidence of being able to pay you back?
I think it is all right you should be able to trust that person your lending money to and if you don't than you shouldn't really lend it to them
4.) This play includes romantic love stories and also ethnic and religious conflict. How well do you expect these elements to blend?
They blend pretty well together because ethnic and religious places have some beliefs that involve romance and who you are to have a relationship with.

Metaphor Poem: Blank Canvas
I am a blank canvas
plain and boring
unamusing to be seen
but if you really knew
the truth behind the canvas
you would know there is more
to the blank canvas than
what you see
I am a blank canvas
waiting to find a
purpose in life itself.
Waiting to be heard,
to inspire others in the world.
I am a blank canvas
having no meaning in life when
its just blank.
But, when there is color it brings
the best out in canvas.
Its the canvas everyone
can enjoy.
I am a blank canvas
that has more meaning to life
that can be judged and not care
that blank canvas is me.
