Merchant of Venice Play: Rough Draft.

Back then in the Shakespeare time, Love, religion, money, justice,  and law each play a role in the Merchant of Venice that shows a perspective on others in the book. Basaanio wants to see the girl he dreams to be with Portia, but he has no money.  So he goes to his dear friend Antonio for a loan of money. This causes Antonio to go to Shylock a man who lends money to others, but Antonio and Shylock don’t really have a great relationship because Antonio is a Christian and Shylock is a jew, but Shylock looks past that. “I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following; but I will not eat with you, drink with you, nor pray with you.”  This shows that Shylock looked past the relationship status they have which is bad one but he will still have some conversation with Antonio.

Shylock is the type of person who believes in revenge towards people especially Christians. “I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.” This shows that Shylock has a big hatred towards Christians and thinks as if two wrongs make a right.

Shylock only thinks about his money He doesn’t care about his family and the reasons why they do what they do. “Why,
thou- loss upon loss! The thief gone with so much, and so much to
find the thief; and no satisfaction, no revenge; nor no ill luck
stirring but what lights o' my shoulders; no sighs but o' my
breathing; no tears but o' my shedding!” He has no idea of why Jessica ran away with his money, only thing he is focused on is the justice he can seek against Antonio.

“What, Jessica!- Thou shalt not gormandize
As thou hast done with me- What, Jessica!-
And sleep and snore, and rend apparel out-
Why, Jessica, I say!” Shylock is not really loving to his daughter. The way he talks to her is the way he talks to others in a cruel way. This may show that he doesn’t really care for his daughter just himself and his money, and revenge against others. H will regret this because it will cause him and his daughter to drift apart and he will lose her.

In this play, Shylock portrays a cruel Jew. Someone who has hatred towards Christian. Cares more about money than family. Overall Shylock portrays law, religion, money, justice, and law in some type of way in this play. At which Shylock will regret everything he has done in the end.
